This is the first article in the series of ‘So you want to be…’ , the intention is to be a compilation of information available on the internet and from other sources.
I always try very hard to ensure that the info is correct, I will not accept any responsibility if your career in action cinema fails miserably as a result of using the information but I will gladly accept 10% commission should you become a huge action star.
In summary, being an extra can be a good starting point, exciting to be on set, help you gain an understanding of the movie industry, no requirement for specific acting skills, you can get regular work if you play your cards right, money can be alright (up to £200/day).
BUT it can get boring, long days spent sitting around, being herded around, poor pay is more the norm.
Key points: look for the right Film and TV Extras Agency for you (more than one can be useful), register online on the right websites, or contact production companies direct, push forward your specialist area or skill, do as you told and be helpful, build relationships.
Check out this definition from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extra_(actor) , interestingly extras can also be referred to as background artists or performers which is the term used by Mark Strange in his book ‘Ready for Action’
Very good articles, a day in a life of an extra: http://www.ideasfactory.com/film_tv/features/ftv_feature50.htm

Ok websites with decent FAQ or info section about being an extra, check them out and make up your own mind:

If all this feels like too much hard work then watch Ricky Gervais in Extras.
Hope this helps.
